Uh-oh: Did McCabe inadvertently out Comey for lying (under oath)?

According to middle-of-the-road law professor Jonathon Turley (GWU)…

The answer is: Yes.

After he was fired, McCabe issued a statement saying that his firing was politically motivated, unfounded and unjust.

OK, it’s his right to fight back … no issue with that

But, according to Prof. Turley, McCabe may have also opened a Pandora’s box …

==============

In the middle of his statement, McCabe asserts:

The OIG investigation has focused on information I chose to share with a reporter through my public affairs officer and a legal counselor.

As Deputy Director, I was one of only a few people who had the authority to do that.

It was not a secret, it took place over several days, and others, including the Director, were aware of the interaction with the reporter.

So, what’s the problem?

First, the non-partisan Inspector General concluded that the “interaction” was an inappropriate (to say the least) leak of confidential government information.

That’s a no-no.

Second, McCabe tries to diffuse or re-center blame by asserting that Comey  “was aware of the interaction”.

That’s where the rub comes in …

You see, Comey testified under oath that he never leaked information or authorized anybody else to do so.

According to Turley:

McCabe’s statement would seem to directly contradict statements Comey made in a May 2017 congressional hearing.

Asked if he had “ever been an anonymous source in news reports about matters relating to the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation” or whether he had “ever authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports about the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation,” Comey replied “never” and “no.”

Oops.

So, either McCabe is lying in his statement or Comey perjured himself by lying under oath.

Hmmm.

So, both are leakers – McCabe and Comey have both admitted to leaking.

And, at least one of them is lying … one in a public statement (which I don’t think is a crime) … or one in testimony under oath (which is a crime).

Turley points out the grand irony of it all:

Comey has just started a road tour to promote his forthcoming book, “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership”.

Double hmmm…

It’s moot – They’re all corrupt! Wray has an unprecedented opportunity to do the right thing and clean up the whole mess. Somehow I doubt he’ll do it. I’ve been wary of him since I watched his confirmation hearing. I hope I’m wrong ……..
