Free college for all?

Idea falls flat with voters

Interesting article in left-leaning Politico: Teflon Don confounds Democrats

Based on research, conducted by private firms and for Democratic campaign arms, Politico analysts have concluded:

Democrats tried attacking Donald Trump as unfit for the presidency. They’ve made the case that he’s ineffective. They’ve argued that Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself. They repeatedly claim that his campaign was in cahoots with Russia. None of it is working.

And, many of the proposals Democrats are pushing fall flat in focus groups and polling.

Many of the ideas party leaders have latched on to in an attempt to appeal to their lost voters — free college tuition, raising the minimum wage to $15, even Medicaid for all — test poorly among voters outside the base.

Of course, the results re: free college tuition caught my eye …

“Free” is one of the most compelling selling propositions on earth.

So, why isn’t the idea of free college getting broadscale traction?

“Working-class voters are not interested. … this growing bloc in the electorate think that college is not good, and they actually disdain folks that go to college.”

More specifically, the call for free college tuition:

1) Fosters resentment at ivory tower elitism.

2) Breeds regret from people who have degrees but are now buried under debt.

3) Is seen by many voters as a lie — that they’ll end up paying for tuition some in one way or another

4) Worries some that they’ll be paying the tuition of someone else who’ll be getting a degree for free.

So, what should Dems do?

Politico’s advice: Drop the talk of free college.

Instead, emphasize making college more affordable and push job skills training.

Might work …
