DC’s anti-burglary initiative off to a bad start …

Let’s end the week with something from the you-can’t-make-this-stuff-up file …

There has been an epidemic of burglaries in DC.

The DC police chief chalks it a change in criminals’ organization structure:

“We used to say that violence was neighborhood-based … now criminal street gangs are organized around armed robberies.

They’re involved in a high number of robberies and they don’t just do it in one neighborhood.”

In MBA-speak, they used to be organized geographically … now they’re organizing functionally.

Hmmm.

Recognizing the problem, Mayor Muriel Bowser did the what mayors do ….

Mayor Bowser formed a task force, and staged an event to announce her bold move to the public.

But, the hoopla hit a bump in the road:

The DCist reports that: a news crew’s car was robbed while reporters covered the press conference.

According to ABC7 News reporter Stephen Tschida, thieves tore through the news vehicle and a culprit smashed a window out of the car and stole a cache of equipment.Tschida said the crime happened a few feet away from where the mayor and chief were speaking.

That, my friends, is not the way to kick-off a program …

I had seen this. It also seems extremely odd for the police to convene to task force to…stop crime. I thought that was kind of their basic mission already.
