MH370: My favorite conspiracy theories ….

The list doesn’t include either of my 2 favorites ….

 

My favorites are the “D.B. Cooper” and “Hack & Drone” scenarios.

D.B. Cooper

A friend (former Navy pilot) served this up to me.

First, some history.

In 1971, a dude — dubbed D.B. Cooper — hijacked a plane flying between Portland and Seattle.

He demanded (and got) a $220K ransom – a big deal in 1971.

He parachuted from the plan – with the dough – and was never captured.

The FBI says he didn’t survive the jump, but no ground evidence was ever found and the FBI case file is still open.

My friend’s theory: The pilot wanted to “disappear”  … so he knocked out the co-pilot, took the plane to 45,000 feet to disable the passengers, set the auto-pilot for the Indian Ocean route, took the plane down to 20,000 feet, then jumped out over Malaysia (after the plane made its u-turn.

Why I like the theory:

1) Haven’t heard it on the round-the-clock media reports

2) Reconciles the planes report movements – up, down and off across the ocean

3) Provides a reason the pilot would want the plane beneath a couple of miles of water – so folks wouldn’t know he’d bailed out.

I’m probably missing some parts of the logic, but you get the drift ….

Hack & Drone

I’m personally most intrigued by the electronics angle.

One wild theory was floated early on that piqued my interest.

A tech dude speculated that this was a (terrorist) test of whether the 777s computer systems could be hacked and the plane essentially turned into a remote control drone.

I initially just chuckled at that but … when asked other tech experts didn’t categorically rule it out since the 777 is almost 100% computer controlled  … hack in, and maybe you can control the plane remotely.

Couple that with a reports that Russia downed one of our drones by “breaking the link with US operators with complex radio-electronic” technology”.

Hmmm …

If one were to test something like that — hacking & droning —  the hand-off between Malaysia and Viet Nam controllers  would be a nice hole in the system (that’s the exact timing of the turn west back over Malaysia) ,,.  and cruising over the radar-challenged Indian Ocean would be a nice venue for test-droning.

That, would explain why the plane flew around for 7 or 8 hours before tanking in the ocean (which is where I think it is).

Imagine the terror-impact if it gets revealed that the most sophisticated airplanes can be hacked and controlled by bad guys.

Would make the Target credit card fiasco look like child’s play.

    I found this theory on Wired to be plausible. It explains the turns, drop in altitude and rational for flying may hours into the Indian Ocean. Note, its not the least bit sexy: http://www.wired.com/2014/03/mh370-electrical-fire/

    Sorry. I do not buy the Wired theory.

    First, smoke in the cockpit means at least one of the pilots goes on his smoke mask/O2. The masks are designed to operate in smoke unless there is open flame. Next, automatically shutting down the entire electrical system, including the battery and flight essential bus (which may not even be possible) in event of smoke in the cockpit or anywhere else in the aircraft prior to taking 30 seconds to send a Mayday message or switching the transponder to emergency does not seem smart, particularly when the radios are working, so they are probably not being consumed by a fire. We also know now that all the electrical power was not in fact turned off. The satellite systems that were apparently operating for the entire flight had to have been powered by one of the major busses. That means some of the radios and the transponder, which must be on the flight essential bus, also must have had electricity.

    The aircraft was in stable flight. The satellite systems were operating, the engine telemetry systems were operating. The electrical systems were operating. Other then the fact that communications systems were disabled or not used there is absolutely no evidence that the aircraft systems were not operating normally. The only suspicious things about the flight are much more easily explained by a deliberate attempt to deceive at the exact time when the aircraft was out of contact with ATC.

    I believe the left turn was designed to do two things, avoid primary radar and get the plane over a suitable, lightly-populated area. The turn worked. Thai and Malaysian primary radars did not effectively track the target. It was days later before they even noticed there were a few primary hits that may have been MH370. I’ve flown in that area of the world. Their primary radar is crap.

    An excursion to 45,000 feet and then depressurizing the aircraft is a really good way to kill the remaining crew and passengers, providing complete freedom to do anything for the remainder of the flight, like bail out when over lightly populated land.

    The catastrophic failure scenario has to be either catastrophic, as in the aircraft falls from the sky immediately, or contrived. I believe many are contrived to protect the reputation of the pilot. This happens all the time and is even institutionalized by many pilot unions. I’ll even make a low stakes bet that if this guy did bail out, and is eventually captured, his pilots union will argue at his trial that he should continue to collect benefits.

    This is so obvious to me that I wonder why it is not being used as the primary theory. I can only surmise that law enforcement wants the pilot, if he is indeed alive, to think he got away with it. Maybe he will make a stupid mistake ant reveal himself. Me, I doubt he will anytime soon. He is not a dumb guy.

    And yeah, I’m the Navy pilot.

    Payne stewart ghost plane scenario: Lithium batteries in cargo hull cause massive fire, crew changes flight plan and tries to kill fire by flying at high altitude accidentally killing everybody on board. Plane flies on auto pilot until it runs out of fuel.
